# Fill Patterns

Fill patterns are the hatches drawn where the cut plane passes through a wall. Each layer's material word picks its pattern. In `walltype EXT-1 layers [brick 4", air 1", core: stud 6", gyp 5/8"]`, `brick` draws Brick, `stud` draws Engineered wood and `gyp` draws Plaster, gypsum board, stucco. No pattern lists `air`, so that layer is left blank.

Each swatch shows one inch of sheet at 1/4" = 1'-0", which is four feet of wall, enlarged. Patterns are sized on paper, so their spacing on the sheet is the same at every scale.

Code `312000-004`. Material words: `earth`, `soil`, `grade`.

## Add a fill pattern

Patterns come from `.pat` files, the hatch-pattern format most CAD tools read and write. Use the drafting version of a pattern, not the model version.

1. Convert the file:
   ```sh theme={"theme":{"light":"github-light","dark":"github-dark"},"languages":{"custom":["/languages/loft.json","/languages/loft-fragment.json"]}}
   pnpm pat:convert stone.pat --size 12pt
   ```
   This writes `stone.tokens.json` next to the file; `--out` names a different file.
2. Set the size. `--size` is the length of one unit of the file on the sheet at 1/4" = 1'-0", written as `12pt`, `0.25in` or `5mm`. If the file is drawn in inches or millimeters, give `--units in` or `--units mm` instead. If its header states its units, give neither.
3. Add the material words that pick the pattern, next to its name. Each word can pick only one pattern.
   ```json theme={"theme":{"light":"github-light","dark":"github-dark"},"languages":{"custom":["/languages/loft.json","/languages/loft-fragment.json"]}}
   "$extensions": {
     "org.loftlang": { "name": "Stone", "materials": ["stone"] }
   }
   ```
4. Copy the pattern into `loft-standard.fill-patterns.json` and run `pnpm gen:graphics`. It then draws in the playground and shows on this page.
